Random Playlists Truly Random?

August 2, 2005

There was a slight buzz a few months ago with pieces even in the New York Times about the iPod or iShuffle playing favorites with your playlists. Most all of these stories said somewhere that, just like flipping a coin, you may end up with 10 heads or 3 Sibelius symphonies in a row, but in the end it all evens out. Sometimes, though, it is just too uncanny the way playlists even in my 84 gig music collection seem to play favorites. So just for the hell of it, I loaded up all my music, but Foobar on random, and played around 5 seconds of a track while recording it. It may all be random, but sometimes it seems like it favors audiobooks and George Carlin one time, classical music another, and true randomness a third time.
