Japan Looking to Install 10Tbit Backbone

Oh, if only the following paragraph were describing broadband in the U.S

NTT says it needs to step up from its current DWDM backbone, which multiplexes 10-Gbit/s signals, to a 10-Tbit/s network that can support multiple 100-Gbit/s channels because “data traffic has been doubling every year due to the rapid spread of broadband access.” NTT says 10-Tbit/s transmission over a single fiber has so far been achieved in the lab.

Apparently, since Japan has been deploying extremely fast broadband down the last mile, their backbone has started becoming saturated with the extra use. I get promotions for SBC DSL at an amazing 6mpbs, and the Japanese are talking about updating their backbone because consumer’s 100mbit lines are straining the country’s pipes. So the next you get frustrated at uploading under 50kB/sec, just think about the Japanese upgrades to keep up with all those 100mbit lines. Gotta love broadband in the U.S.

Music Publishers Society: Now Closing Local Restaurants

As an employee at a locally owned restaurant, this kind of story just makes me sick:

Restaurant Owner Says Songs May Cost Him His Business

Once again, the punishment for copyright violation is completely out of proportion with the crime. Between $750 and $30k PER SONG? $30k?! And this is for songs produced at least 30 years ago, one by an artist who has been dead for 36 years. Not to mention it was not the restaurant owner who played the songs, but a local band whose setlist he probably had no control over. I suppose he could have stopped the band as soon as they started playing, but that would risk losing bands from performing in the future. Of course, ASCAP did try to collect royalties from the Girl Scouts several years back so this really doesn’t surprise me. It just infuriates me.

Creative Commons Mashups and A Letter From Iraq

A great read posted on Time’s website from a soldier in Iraq.  I wish there were more reports like this one from Iraq in the main stream media.

Waiting for an Anti-Youtube Law

With the proliferation of video streaming sites such as Youtube, Metacafe, and Dailymotion, sites are popping up that allow users to watch entire seasons of television shows directly from their websites by linking to the full videos hosted on the video sites. Wanna watch all 18 seasons of the simpsons without downloading anything? How about all 10 seasons of South Park? Or maybe Futurama? Click Here. How about Family Guy? These sites are great for the end user who gets access to watch these shows, but I can’t imagine DailyMotion not getting into trouble for hosting so much of the big networks’ intellectual property. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if the MPAA pushes for legislation that makes it illegal to watch streaming video without the proper clearance to do so. If the net keeps allowing big media’s ‘property’ to be viewed without paying easier and easier, and the MPAA and RIAA continue to have the power to write legislation that gets pushed into law, then a law forbidding watching something without the correct license could be entirely feasible. But until then, hey, might as well watch some Simpsons.
